Total Books Read for 2008

Well, as 2008 draws to an end, I find myself once again totaling the number of books (and pages) I read for the year. I started recording the books I read in a notebook/journal a little over two years ago, mainly for fun and to push myself to beat my total for last year. Both years, I did manage to beat my previous total, but this year, not so much! It's understandable, because of how busy I was this year, but I can't help but feel a bit upset. I can't help it-- I love a good challenge, even if the challenge is only for myself. So I'm a bit dramatic about my book totals- WHO CARES! :D So, here are my numbers for 2008, from Jan 3rd (that was when I finished my first book for '08) to December 31st: Books Finished: 200 Pages: 70, 892 Average Number of Books Read Per Month: 17 Highest Number of Books Read in a Month: 30 (That was this month-- I picked it up a notch so I could hit 200 at least) Average Number of Pages in Each Book: 354 Highest Number of Pages in One Book: 870 All in all, it wasn't too bad of a year, and I realize that for some, finishing 200 in a year is amazing. Personally, a great year for me is hitting around 275-320 books in a year, so this year was a bit of a let down. Everyone has their own speed, and not everyone has as much time on their hands for relaxing and reading like I sometimes do. I don't care about competing against others, so please don't think that I am trying to rub my achievment into anyone's face, because I'm not! In my book *No Pun Intended, of Course! ;-)* if a person finishs even a few books in a year, that's something to be proud of because really, most people either do not wish to stop and pick up a book or they don't have the time. I know some people personally who might read 10 books in FIFTEEN OR TWENTY YEARS! Seriously! They have the time, but they despise reading. So finishing say, 50 books in a year is pretty damn good, considering! As long as you enjoy what you are reading, it shouldn't matter if you read more or less than another person. Just read! Okay, enough about that for now. Here is a run down of the books I read this year. If I had the time, I'd add a small pic of each cover on here, but that would take a lot longer than just typing, so if you find a book that sounds interesting, you can either ask me about it or take the time and find it on Barnes and Nobles (whose link is listed at the bottom of my blog, hint hint!). Hope you enjoy and I haven't just bored you COMPLETELY to death! Oh, and feel free to comment, maybe tell your totals or some of your favorites that you read this year, etc. Have a great New Year's, everyone!

"The Princess" by Jude Deveraux

Synopsis From B&N.com:

Her name was Aria...a beautiful, arrogant princess from a small European kingdom. Stranded in a storm of intrigue near the Florida Keys, she is swept ashore and into the arms of dashing J.T. Montgomery, an officer of the American Navy. Disdainful at first, Aria is secretly tantalized by the handsome Lieutenant's brash independence...and beneath her proud reserve, J.T. discovers a woman of sensuous fire. To escape her enemies, they return to her royal domain -- with Aria posing as an American bride. But if their daring charade succeeds, Aria must choose -- between the kingdom she was born to rule, and the man she was destined to love!
I picked up The Princess spur of the moment earlier this year, when the library was discarding a lot of the older books for mere pennies. I had heard of the author before and I thought 'What the heck, I'll give her a try'. The worst that could happen would be I hated it, and there went a day or reading and 25 cents, right? But on the other hand, I could end up loving it, and then I have not only a new book to add to my favorite's list, but also a whole new author to check out. Not bad outcomes, either way. But I'm very glad that I took the 'chance' and grabbed this book, along with a few others by Deveraux!
I will admit that at the beginning of the book, I was kind of hesitant and feared that I wouldn't end up liking the characters. The story line was interesting enough, even from page one, and the plot flowed at a nice, brisk speed. But the characters' actions and personalities seemed annoying, weak, and rude, and in my opinion, no matter how amazing the rest of the book is, it won't float my boat if I can't relate to the main characters.
At first, Jarl and Aria were constantly bickering, and Aria was dead set on keeping her cold 'I'm-the-Princess-and-I'm-too-good-for-anything-but-the-absolute-best' attitude, which annoyed me to no end! Now, I'm okay with the hero and heroine having their arguments, I think it's needed at times, and no one is perfect, especially not a working relationship, even in a fiction novel. Heck, it can even be highly entertaining at times! But their fights were almost boring, and I was tempted to just skip over the pages until they got past their problems. Luckily, I stuck it out, and I found that as the story moved on and the plot thickened, the characters also changed, growing more dynamic and 3-D, becoming someone that I could stand and actually wanted to learn more about. I was happy, and I settled back in for the ride, which I assure you was riddled with twists and turns and ups and downs!
For the most part, the beginning character flaws were the only problems I had with this book at all. The rest of it was enjoyable, humorous, sexy, and sweet, all in all, a great romance, even if it was written 21 years ago! As they say, a good book, a good classic, can be enjoyed by others years later.
Watching how Jarel slowly falls in love with Aria, and how he changes her attitude from snobby and cold to passionate and kind was wonderful. More than once I found myself sighing in pleasure after reading one of their conversations or giggling *Giggling, can you imagine it?!* after watching her stubbornness and innocence for the American way of life flare up yet again. And in between all of that, along with the mystery of who is trying to kill her, the love scenes were pretty warm, not boiling, but not written by a nun either! And what they lacked in steaminess they made up for in romance and tender moments.
4.5/5 STARS! A glorious love story that shows you that sometimes choosing between the two things you love is not the easiest thing to do. Touching romance, decent sex scenes, plenty of wit and charm, and yes, even a bit of mystery. In other words, a perfect read! I can't wait to find more books by this captivating author!

"Evermore"

Synopsis From B&N.com:

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch. Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste…

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition. He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets. Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head. She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is. Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

Compared to amazing teen fantasy authors such as the acclaimed Stephenie Meyer and Melissa Marr, Evermore manages to snag the readers attention from the very beginning and pull you head long into the story! Get ready for a wild ride that is filled with twisting paths and mystery, love and fantasy.

Ever's *Interesting name, I must say...* story starts out fairly normal: she and her family were involved in a car crash, and she was the only one that walked away from it alive. She lives with her aunt, after moving from Oregon to California, and now besides dealing with the grief and feeling like it was her fault that her parents and sister died, she also has to deal with moving far away, starting over fresh, and trying to fit in at school. As if that's not hard enough, now add in the fact that since the accident, Ever has had some..unusual gifts: she can see ghost, talk to them, and she can read people's thoughts. Life for Ever is anything but easy and perfect, and once Damen, the new *And very hot!* student, moves to town, her life is once again changed- forever.

Despite her unique abilities, which she sees as more of a curse than a gift, Ever doesn't know or understand everything. She doesn't know why her sister, Riley, is still lingering around and she can talk to her while her parents, and almost all other ghosts, are invisible to her. Even her own abilities sometimes remain a mystery to her. The fun thing about this is that whenever you discover some new twist or finding in the plot, Ever does to, so the reader is kept in the dark as much as the actual characters, allowing you to connect a bit more with the story and people themselves, trying to find out what's going on just like they are. And as you get farther into the book, you realize that nothing is always as it first seems...

Now Ever has to help her sister continue on to the other side; spend more time with her aunt; find out why her best friend is suddenly following around the mysterious new woman in town like she's some type of God; figure out who--and what-- Damen is, along with why he's paying so much attention to her; learn to control her abilities, and, oh yeah, deal with day to day teenage things. Life is anything but simple! Because of these complications and mysteries, Evermore is filled with action, suspense, romance, drama, and fantasy... All in all, a perfect read for anyone who enjoys any or all of those things.

5/5 STARS! Evermore is a thrilling read for teen readers and yes, even a few adults too. The writing style, story, and characters are a bit like Meyer and Marr's popular books, but written with a new twist and voice so as not to seem like a cheap remake. And after reading the book, you too will probably want your own Damen, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice. ;) After all-- Immortality is like the apple in the garden of Eve: forbidden fruit that tempts and always tastes sweeter.

"So Yesterday"

Synopsis From B&N.com:
We are all around you.You don’t think about us much, because we are invisible. Well, not exactly invisible. A lot of us have hair dyed in four colors, or wear five-inch platform sneakers, or carry enough metal in our skin that it’s a hassle getting on an airplane. Quite visible, actually, come to think of it.
But we don’t wear signs saying what we are. After all, if you knew what we were up to, we couldn’t work our magic. We have to observe carefully, and push and prompt you in ways you don’t notice. Like good teachers, we let you think you’ve discovered the truth on your own.
And you need us. Someone has to guide you, to mold you, to make sure that today turns into yesterday on schedule. Because frankly, without us to monitor the situation, who knows what would get crammed down your throats? It’s not like you can just start making your own decisions, after all.
Ever wonder who was the first kid to keep a wallet on a big chunky chain, or wear way-too-big-pants on purpose? What about the mythical first guy who wore his baseball cap backwards? These are the Innovators, the people at the peak of the cool pyramid.
Seventeen-year-old Hunter Braque is a Trend setter, on the second level of the pyramid. His job: find the newest, coolest thing for the retail market. His MO: observe, don’t get involved. But from the moment he meets Innovator Jen James, he can’t help getting involved in a big way.
Part love story, part mystery, part stinging satire, Scott Westerfeld’s spellbinding new novel will make you question everything you’ve ever believed about how to be cool.

I've read all of Scott Westerfeld's other teen fiction books, and I enjoyed them a lot-- especially his Ugly series and Peeps (which was kind of a vampire book). So when I finally found this one at the library, after being told that I just HAD to read it because it was the best book he's ever wrote, I was expecting something major, something powerful, a story that would reach right out and not just grab me but hit me--hard. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed in the end.

The story is very different, and it does cover both mystery, a bit of teenage romance, and proves a point, but other than that, I felt that the over all book was only so-so. The characters were kind of flat, and even though the story was told in first person, from Hunter's point of view, it wasn't very captivating, like a good 1st POV should be. Then again, my dislike of it could have also been because it was a guy that was the main character, a guy that did all the talking, and in the books that I read, I'm use to it being a girl. Maybe if we could have heard more about Hunter instead of listening to him go on and on about his job and figuring out the 'great mystery', I would have enjoyed it more.

Hunter's world isn't really that different from our world today-- they may use different words, etc, then us *Trendsetter, Lagger to name a few*, but that's about it. We've become a society that relies on technology and new products-- we always want the newest, the coolest, the best item on the market. Some of us more than others, true, but as a whole, that's usually how it works. The companies know this, and they use it to get more money out of us. You see it all over-- on TV, in magazines, newspapers, every where you look, they have an ad for their new product, trying to sell it to the consumer anyway that they can. It could very well be our down fall one day, who knows. The point is, Westerfeld wrote about this fairly well in So Yesterday, and I'll admit that before reading it, I never quite gave it that much thought, but that was just about the only thing that this book had going for it. The mystery element was only so-so, the suspense and action was barely there, and the 'romance' between Jen and Hunter sounded more like the usual 'crush' in most highschool students-- nothing extraordinary, nothing really touching or special, and it showed in the story.

Usually, I like reading Westerfeld's work-- he's writing is always different from most of the other books out there at the time, and he knows how to keep the story at the perfect level -- not too heavy, but not too light either. This is probably why his books are popular among the teens he writes for: it's what they are looking for in a book. And in his other books, that's usually what I like about his books too, even though I am older. This one was different somehow-- more rambling and random, not very comical or intense. Don't get me wrong-- it had it's moments, but there were not enough of them to raise my over-all review of So Yesterday.

3/5 STARS! If you love his work, you might still want to give So Yesterday a try. But if you have never read his work before, or if you didn't enjoy them, then I probably wouldn't recommend this book to you-- at least, not as one of my top picks. It's not terrible, but it's not amazing like I was told by friends. It's at a happy medium between the two.
