[Kame's Review]: "Hard Evidence"

Hard Evidence by Pamela Clare
Publisher: Berkley (October 3, 2006)
Series: I-Team, 2
Genre: Contemporary Romance

After the murder of a teenage girl, a mysterious man in a black leather jacket was seen lurking near the crime scene. Investigative reporter Tessa Novak has him in her sights as the culprit…

That man was Julian Darcangelo, an undercover FBI agent working with the Denver police. He’s closing in on the trail of a human trafficker and killer. Tessa’s accusations could blow his cover, and he wants her off the investigation.

But just as Tessa has made Julian a target of interest, she is now a target of the killer. And as they are forced to trust each other, their physical attraction escalates as intensely as the threat from a ruthless murderer who wants to see both of them dead…

Kame's Review:

“I love you, Tessa. God help us both, but I do.”

This second installment in Pamela Clare’s ITeam series starts up a few months after Extreme Exposure’s epilogue.  Tessa Novak is the Denver Independent’s reporter on the cop beat.  She is a caffeine addict and one night when she worked late she stops at a gas station for a bad cup of coffee because her favorite coffee shop is closed.  While waiting in line to pay for the sludge in the cup, a young girl runs into the store.  She begs the clerk to call the police, begs for their help.  Before the clerk can dial 911 the young girl is shot dead.  This time Tessa is not just reporting the story, she is part of the story.  What she doesn’t realize is she has inadvertently become part of an investigation that has consumed Julian Darcangelo’s life for more than 3 years.

When Julian imagines his future it never has a white picket fence.  He will never have a family; he doesn’t even know what it means to be part of a family. From the moment he kisses her to keep her quiet Julian is drawn to Tessa. Their relationship starts out combative, but it eventually turns into love.  Julian is rough around the edges, but he has his sweet moments with Tessa.  Tessa, who battles her own past she isn’t proud of, is the perfect person to love Julian.

My favorite part of this book is how good a reporter Tessa is. Julian and Tessa must go to great lengths to keep their professional lives and their personal connection separate. They do not discuss the case in detail, but Tessa’s investigative skills are good enough for her to figure out what the young girl’s murder was really part of. I also enjoyed how Julian’s character grows so much in this book and I am sure he will be one of my favorites in this series.  Besides a wonderful story, Pamela Clare gives us insights into characters we met in the first book.  Tessa is good friends with Kara and Reece and they help her at crucial times in this book.

This has to be one of my favorite romantic suspense books.  I enjoy romantic suspense and especially books where the hero or heroine grow emotionally during the story. This is a great read, whether you want to read it as part of the series or a stand-alone.  Me, I am continuing on with my friends on the ITeam and I can’t wait to find out what happens next

Blog Tour: Spotlight on Red Stone Security Series + Giveaway!

Katie fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and working too many jobs she hated, she finally figured things out.
She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense. Her publishers include Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne and NAL/Signet Eclipse (Penguin). Regardless of genre, she always includes a happy ending. When she’s not creating stories she loves spending time with her husband and family.

Fatal Deception Excerpt

Mara steered her vehicle into the two car garage she shared with Harrison. His truck was already there and that surprised her. She’d hoped she would have some time to decompress. After dropping off her stash of weapons and disguise at a storage place, she’d returned Pamela’s car then hightailed it home. All she wanted was a hot shower and some hot sex. She desperately wanted to reconnect with Harrison, but she had a feeling the latter was out of the question considering Harrison’s attitude toward her during their last conversation. And she didn’t have the energy to seduce him tonight, even if she wanted him so badly her entire body ached with the need. At least she didn’t have to cook. The only silver lining.

As she stepped inside the kitchen from the garage, she was surprised that all the lights were off. She’d assumed he would have dinner out for them since he’d said he was bringing home takeout. Before she’d even put her purse down on the counter, she felt a presence behind her. The only thing that stopped her from lashing out was Harrison’s distinctive male scent. Natural, spicy, and so unique to him, it made her lower abdomen tighten with need.

He pulled her back tight against his chest and tossed her purse to the tiled floor. Though she was much shorter, she fit perfectly against him, her head right under his chin. She could feel the leashed power in him as he wrapped his arms around her. Her heart began to thud heavily.

The room was dark, as was the rest of the house that she could see. Outside light streaming in through the half open blinds and the neon glow from the built-in microwave barely illuminated the room. Darkness and shadows surrounded them, but she wasn’t afraid. Never with Harrison.

From the feel of his erection at her back, he had something fun in mind tonight. She needed a little fun in her life right now. With one arm a steel band around her chest, he leaned down and nipped her ear. His breath was hot against her face and neck as he slowly ran his tongue along the shell of her ear, then pressed his teeth to her lobe.

She shuddered at the contact, wanting a whole lot more.

“Take off your sweater, but don’t turn around,” he whispered in her ear, pure domination in his voice.

Another shudder rippled through her, this time more obvious. Her panties dampened at the not-so-subtle order in his voice. She loved when he got like this. When he took complete control and she didn’t have to think about anything other than pleasure. Right now she desperately needed a release. A way to forget how she was lying to him, how she’d kept secrets from the man she loved and how she might be leaving soon.

She swallowed hard, shoving the thought away as she tore her sweater off and blindly tossed it away. When she went to take her bra off, he growled softly.

“I didn’t say the bra.” Harrison’s strong, calloused hands settled on her shoulders. He played with the straps for a moment, then slowly slid his hands down until they covered her breasts.

[Kame's Review]: "Extreme Exposure"

Extreme Exposure by Pamela Clare
Publisher: Berkley (August 2, 2005)
Series: I-Team, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Sparks fly when a hardboiled reporter meets a handsome senator. But a political scandal—and attempts on her life—could drive them apart. Or maybe adversity could draw them into a bond even more intense than their steamy sexual embraces.

Kame's Review:

Kara McMillan is part of the ITeam, an investigative reporter at the Denver Independent . Reece Sheridan is a Colorado State Senator.  Prior to his election he was a High School teacher who was encouraged by his students to run for office. He has no intentions of being a career Politian and pays close attention to environmental causes.  Kara had interviewed Reece over the phone before for an article, however one night they meet while waiting for tables at a restaurant.  Reece is immediately attracted to Kara and finds her after his dinner with his sister is complete. Sparks fly and Reece drives Kara home. The next day Kara receives a tip from a whistle blower. This could be the story to define Kara’s career, it could also be the story that kills her.

A friend had recommended this book to me, and I will confess the name of the series caused me to assume this book was a military themed book – as I had been reading that genre quite a bit. I found the investigative reporter angle so intriguing.  Pamela Clare did a wonderful job at writing this book in a way that those of us unfamiliar with newspaper reporting could understand.  I felt like I was right on Kara’s shoulder as she was working on her story. Her internal struggle to try to give her story the justice is deserved and be the Mom she wanted to be to her four year old son Connor was one I could empathize with.  Reece’s care and concern for Kara and her son just warmed my heart.  The romantic scenes between Kara and Reece were steamy, and just the right amount.

This book has the right mix of suspense story and sexual chemistry.  I am so happy it is a series. The story is complimented with a host of other quirky characters, one being Kara free spirited mother that I would love to spend more time with. I borrowed this book from the library, but will be on the lookout for a copy to put in my library.

Kame's Review:

Imagine riding the busy subway in New York City and someone catching your eye, then they get off a stop later.  You think your chance at an instant connection is gone forever, but when you go out for drinks with a friend you see this person again.  Is it destiny or fate?

This is how Charles and Charlotte meet in Naturally, Charlie.  Both go by the name Charlie, and the name suits them both well.   Charles feels the immediate connection and has the foresight to not rush Charlotte and let her set the pace of the relationship.  Charlotte has been hurt in the past, by a fiancée whose family did not think she was the right choice.  Charles and her former fiancée traveled in similar circles, and leery of a second broken heart Charlotte decides a friendship is the best choice.

These characters were multidimensional. Charles is a freelance writer who has a soft soul.  He is patient and kind. He knows he must wait until Charlotte is ready to learn the depth of his feelings. Charlotte is a quirky girl who makes up words to convey her feelings and bakes cupcakes as a way to calms herself. She has yet to deal with the hurt of the rejection of her fiancée.

This is one of those stories when you think this could really happen, this could just as well be nonfiction or romantic fiction. It is not all hearts and flowers, and there are some scenes of great pain, along with joy. I loved how turns were taken between the voices of the characters.  One chapter would be told from Charles point of view and a different one from Charlotte’s – I really liked how the male and female symbol was used near the chapter heading to indicate whose voice would be talking.

Want a book that wraps you like a warm sweater on a winter’s day – this is the one for you. This is Ms. Scott’s debut novel – a great debut and an anxiously await more!

[Kame's Review]: "Love Unscripted"

Love Unscripted by Tina Reber
Publisher: Atria Books (September 8, 2012)
Series: Love, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Ryan Christensen just wanted to be an actor. Never in his wildest dreams did he ever think that accepting a role in an unknown film would toss his career into overdrive. His new fame has cost him dearly; anonymity is no longer an option. His fans stalk him, the paparazzi hound him, and Hollywood studios all want a piece of him. Despite all of that, Ryan Christensen craves the most basic of human needs - to have love in his heart and privacy in his life.

Taryn Mitchell, the story's protagonist, is a realist. She's been feigning contentment, running the family pub in Seaport, Rhode Island, while quietly nursing her own internal heartaches. Her feet are fairly glued to the ground and she doesn't buy into all the hype that has descended on her tiny, coastal town. In her world, men are safe if they're kept at a distance.

Fate has other plans for these two when their paths cross one sunny afternoon. A group of female fans has attacked him, leaving his shirt torn, his face cut, and Ryan in obvious distress. Bonds between them form from the most dramatic of circumstances while jealousy, insecurity, and the stress of his celebrity life try to tear them apart.

Through all the tabloid lies, secrecy, and pressure, can Taryn's peace and Ryan's high-profile insanity live together in harmony?

Kame's Review:

I am generally a person who can keep focus, and when I have a lot of work to do I hunker down and get it done.  This book did not let me do that.  I found I was giving myself milestones – get this group of papers corrected and I can read another chapter.  So went the entire book, and honestly the book that follows also!

The setting of this book is something I can imagine very well, a small seacoast town in Rhode Island.  It is the location of a blockbuster movie set.   Taryn Mitchell owns a pub and has no interest in the craziness that has descended on her tranquil town.   She has never been able to figure out why women swoon for unattainable men. She never hung that poster of the teen heartthrob on her wall, why start now at 27 years old. Taryn is grounded in who she is. Trusting a man is hard for Taryn as eight months ago she found her fiancée with another woman.  She lives a predictable, painless existence.  But her father always told her “You never know which way the wind blows”. And the wind is about to blow Taryn’s life in a whole new direction. This new direction came running down the sidewalk straight at Taryn, Ryan Christensen, a reluctant heartthrob.  All he is doing is a job he loves, acting. He hates the crowds and the attention.  And at the exact moment Tarn was putting out the sign detailing the weekend entertainment in her pub, he came running into her life, running away from screaming fans and the nagging photographers, and into her pub.

Now you might expect a plot where Taryn and Ryan look into each other’s eyes feel an immediate connection and then run upstairs to her apartment. What actually happens is a wonderful relationship progression.

“…it’s our crazy story,” he stated. “It’s been ours, only ours. There’s been a lot of romance, sometimes way too much drama….Very memorable comedy, a few pulse-chasing action scenes …We’ve also had our fair share of suspense and raw terror, and unfortunately gut-wrenching heartache too”

This has to be one of the most satisfying books I have read in a long time.  Yes this is a romance complete with a “Happily Ever After”, but there are parts I cried, parts I wanted to strangle a character or two, and times I could not contain my joy.  Taryn and Ryan will forever be one of my favorite romance couples, and that is because they have a relationship, they talk and work through their issues.

I had first received this book as a free download from a reviewing service.  The formatting of the file was horrendous, I enjoyed this book so much I abandoned the free copy and bought Love Unscripted for my  Nook, and the second book in the series also – even before I finished the first
